Report from Nordic Harmonisation of LCA

BIM for Building LCA – Enhancing Nordic Sustainable Construction through Digitalisation

Publiceret 30-09-2024

The final delivery from the BIM4LCA projects consists of a wide range of formats to help and improve calculation of the climate impact of buildings through digitalisation. It includes analysis of BIM-based building LCA process, chart of BIM data requirements, free BIM models to download, video learning material and recommendations to authorities supporting sustainable construction goals.

As part of the Nordic harmonisation of life cycle assessment, the main objective of the BIM4LCA project is to support regulatory harmonisation and create best practice guidelines for BIM-based building LCA and material declaration.

Information harmonisation

The BIM4LCA project highlights the need for Nordic authorities to set BIM requirements for climate declaration and support information harmonisation in the construction sector. The project emphasises the importance of integrating BIM and LCA processes to achieve sustainable construction goals.

The BIM4LCA project produced several results, which are here shortly summarised:

Generic description of the BIM to LCA process

... supporting the calculation and reporting of normative LCA in building construction projects and a pathway towards automated BIM-based LCA for instant feedback and low-carbon design solutions Go to section 1 in the report

Generic guidelines for reliable BIM-based material inventory (bill of materials)

Specifications for information needed for modelled building components, data transfer from BIM tools to LCA tools, and iterative design and analysis workflow between BIM and LCA tools Go to sections 2-7 in the report

BIM models to download

Two example buildings with BIM models for practitioners to learn BIM-based building LCA Go to section 8 in the report  Download BIMs and IFC files here
